Colleen Quigley
Colleen Quigley is a professional runner whose journey to elite athletics was anything but conventional. Unlike many athletes who dream of Olympic glory from a young age, Colleen navigated a path filled with diverse passions before finding a home on the track. Initially immersed in dance—ballet, jazz, tap, and pointe—competition was never a driving force. Even in team sports like soccer, camaraderie took precedence over competition. It wasn’t until high school that running entered the picture, almost by default, as a no-cut option that offered fitness without the pressure of tryouts.
Guided by her father who was both coach and mentor, Colleen found solace in the structure and challenge of running. Without pressure to perform, the sport became an avenue for growth rather than stress. Despite early success, a collegiate running career was never part of the plan. Modeling for Wilhelmina Models during high school, a move to New York seemed inevitable. However, a full-ride scholarship to Florida State University under Coach Harvey changed everything. Embracing the opportunity, Colleen flourished both academically and athletically, ultimately winning an NCAA National Championship and becoming a 9-time All-American. She would later qualify for the 2016 Rio De Janeiro Olympics in the 3,000m steeplechase and finish in 8th place.
Professional running was another unexpected turn. Initially committed to a career in dietetics, conversations with elite runners and pro coaches solidified the decision to pursue sports after college. Joining the Bowerman Track Club and signing with Nike, Colleen embraced the challenge of competing at the highest level. Mental health has always been a priority for Colleen as over the years, especially when dealing with injuries, she learned how to take care of herself physically, mentally and emotionally.
From hesitant beginnings to NCAA Champion to Olympian, Colleen Quigley’s journey has been a testament to perseverance, passion, and the power of embracing the unexpected.
